The cathedral’s new 90cm high golden cockerel-shaped weather vane installed at the top of the 85m spire has been gilded with gold leaf from the Sotrami mine in Peru, one of the first mines certified by the Fairtrade Fairmined scheme. The scheme means that consumers can be assured that their gold has been mined responsibly with miners getting a fair price for their product.

The Very Reverend Nicholas Frayling, Dean of Chichester Cathedral, Sussex said: “If every jeweller & customer were to insist on only gold sourced in this way, then thousands of small-scale miners & their communities would be guaranteed a better future.”
